The standard scientific definition is that Energy is the ability of a system to do work is the quantity which we need to get something to move, heat up, light up, burn, explode, etc. Energy is not just one thing, however – it comes in different forms, for example, electrical energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, kinetic energy, etc.: much of energy technology deals with converting

Renewable energy refers to bio-energy, solar energy, wind energy and any other as may be specified by the Authority. Renewable sources of energy are no longer viewed as alternative sources of energy but as the real future where all should be given their clean nature, replaceability, availability in vast amounts (e.g. solar in Botswana) and the fact that Botswana
There are presently three large grid-connected systems in Botswana: a single large-scale 1300 kW solar farm in Phakalane to the north of Gaborone; a recently constructed, but not yet operational, 20 kW EU-funded University of Botswana research system installed in Mokolodi village, just south of Gaborone; and a 34 kW system, owned by Scales Associates

Since 1985, Botswana''s energy sector developments have been guided by the Botswana Energy Master Plan (BEMP), which was last reviewed in 2002. Since this last review, developments have progressed without any primary guiding instrument for almost 15 years now. This National Energy Policy (NEP) therefore, outlines the government''s intents
Botswana''s energy sector has been tied to South Africa and its southern African neighbors since its humble beginnings in the 1950s. Before 1950, Tati Concession Company (TCC), using coal from South Africa and Zimbabwe, was the only power generator in the country and supplied Francistown only (Kanduza 2009).
Integrated Energy Planning and developing an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) are an integral part of the energy planning process in Botswana as guided by its 11th National Development Plans (NDP 11) and other sector policies and ambitions. In the energy sector, the NDP 11 focuses on increasing self-reliance on the country’s energy resources.
Botswana has one of the highest levels of solar insolation in the world, but until recently, there were no reports of significant use of solar energy. However, as of September 2012, the first solar power generation plant in the country has been opened. The Botswana Renewable Energy Conference was held on 11–12 August 2014.
This includes increasing the supply and reliability of Botswana’s energy supply, reducing the cost of domestic electricity, reducing and ideally removing the need for Botswana to import external energy and creating a revenue stream through the export of cleaner electricity and sale of gas. ..
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Botswana could meet 15% of its energy needs in 2030 from its indigenous solar, wind, and bioenergy resources. (2021 evaluation)
Currently, in Botswana electricity is primarily generated from domestic coal resources. Apart from coal-bed methane, there are no proven reserves of other possible fossil fuel resources for energy generation like natural gas or oil. Botswana has large coal reserves, estimated to be in excess of 200 billion tons.
Self Sufficiency The Self-sufficiency (SS) scenario assumes that Botswana will become self-sufficient in electricity production, covering domestic needs and exporting electricity by the year 2035. The projected demand must be met with local resources in the SS scenario.
