To date, 2.3 million rooftop PV systems have been installed in Brazil, with the potential to install more than 90 million rooftop PV systems. In 2023, Brazil added more than 10GW of PV capacity, with a cumulative installed capacity of more than 37GW, making it the fourth largest in the world, behind China, the United States and India.
Rooftop PV accounts for around 70% of the installed PV capacity in Brazil, and as the information about the widening price difference between solar electricity and retail electricity tariffs spreads, more and more residential consumers embark on the rooftop PV option.
The pace of deployment of PV systems in Brazil is staggering, with 70% of them rooftops, exceeding 1GW per month, and doubling the installed capacity of rooftop systems every two years. Brazil is blessed with solar radiation resources and has become one of the pioneers in the development of renewable energy in South America.
About 2.7GW of solar will be installed across 700,000 Brazilian rooftops by 2024, according to national power regulator Aneel.Net-metering rules were introduced in 2012, yet only 7MW has so far been installed. And about 400 of these 700 rooftop arrays were put up in the first six months of this year.
Although Brazil has great potential for the use of solar energy and PV technologies, there is still much to be done to consolidate solar PV generation in the energy mix, due to the existence of technical, economic, social, managerial, and political barriers.
