With an installed capacity of 200MW on a 3.5-hectare site, BESS Vilvoorde will be able to store 800MWh of energy in 320 battery modules measuring 25m x 4m x 3m. Equivalent to 160,000 5kWh domestic batteries, it
Engie had initially misreported the project''s BESS unit dimensions as measuring 25m x 4m x 3m, when in reality Sungrow''s PowerTitan – and with most BESS products in the market – comes in a 20-foot shipping container form factor, measuring around 6m x 2.4m x 2.9m.
Sweco is planning to design a 700MW BESS for GIGA Storage Belgium, which is due to be operational in 2028, the firm said. The project, Green Turtle Battery Park, will have a capacity of 700MW and will start construction in summer 2025 before starting operations by 2028. The facility will be build in...

New-build battery storage projects from three developers totalling 357MW were among resources awarded contracts in Belgium''s latest capacity market auction. Belgian grid operator Elia announced the results of
The global Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Market is experiencing significant growth due to the increasing demand for grid energy storage systems amid grid modernization and the rising adoption of renewable energy sources. The market is segmented by type, including lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, nickel metal hydride, and other
BRUSSELS (Belgium), Tuesday 11th June 2024: In 2023, the equivalent of 1.7 million more European homes became solar battery powered. According to the latest analysis from SolarPower Europe, 17.2 GWh of new BESS capacity was installed in Europe in 2023, experiencing an impressive 94% increase compared to 2022. Looking forward, BESS
The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be deployed in the Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) market and intraday market because of the largest revenue potential. The expected intraday market income is assessed by the software tool Linny-R which applies the optimization technique linear programming based on the rolling horizon approach.
The firm is already investing €17.5 million in the BESS installations at 14 sites across Belgium, totalling 35MWh, and is planning to invest another €12.5 million at another seven locations in the Netherlands, totalling 21MWh. Combining the BESS with EV charging will help to alleviate grid congestion. BESS can reduce the peak demand needs of large EV charging
Key drivers of BESS revenue stack in 2023-24. There are some important common drivers across all European power markets that have shaped BESS revenue stack performance across the last 3 years. All markets generated exceptional BESS returns in 2021-22 driven by a parallel: Gas crisis – gas market tightness given Russian supply cuts
In November last year, Belgium''s grid operator Elia awarded 15-year Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) contracts to 357MW of new-build BESS projects. Those capacity market contracts are thought to represent a relatively small portion of the revenue stack available to BESS assets in the country, but offer long-term revenue certainty, while
One of the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) projects so far in Belgium has been brought online at the site of a former coal power plant. Yuso originated the project''s planning in 2018, and will serve
The project is in line with Europe''s broader objectives of expanding BESS capacity. In July, renewable energy investment company Bluestar Energy Capital announced the launch of Noveria Energy, a project development platform focused on European BESS.. Sweco added that Green Turtle will also help reduce the country''s reliance on gas-fired power plants

Image: Tinne Van der Straeten via Twitter. New-build battery storage projects from three developers totalling 357MW were among resources awarded contracts in Belgium’s latest capacity market auction. Belgian grid operator Elia announced the results of its Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auction just before the end of October.
Looking forward, BESS markets will maintain their upward trajectory between 2025 and 2028, with sustained, but slower, growth rates in the 30-40% range. The overall installed BESS capacity in Europe is projected to expand more than sevenfold to reach 260 GWh of battery storage by 2028.
That includes a mix of new-build and existing battery storage, and a handful of small-scale BESS totalling 25MW/100MWh alongside 560MW/2,240MWh large-scale or utility-scale projects.
By the end of 2023, Europe’s total operating BESS fleet reached around 36 GWh. The residential segment accounted for 63% of this capacity, followed by large-scale battery systems (21%), and commercial & industrial systems (9%).
Baschet noted that while those assets would only earn €11,400 (at that time US$12,820) per MW/year, equal to roughly 7% of the revenues each would need to break even, the contracts were a nice bonus or “cherry on the cake” of a business case for BESS.
