Papua New Guinea (PNG) is blessed with numerous energy resources, including oil, gas, wind, solar, tidal and biomass. Renewable energy resources have taken centre stage as PNG along with other countries seek to push for 32% of its national power demand to be met by renewable energy sources by the year 2030.
Solar and biomass resources have been presented in this article because of their huge availability in Papua New Guinea. With the engagement of remote sensing and geographic information system technology, potentially suitable areas were identified and mapped for biomass and the availability of solar radiation.
The least amount of incoming solar insolation was received in the month of June with 5.24 Kw/m²/day in the north-facing direction. This is the period when the Southern Hemisphere is experiencing winter. During this time of the year, Papua New Guinea is experiencing torrential rainfall and fewer sunshine hours.
This would help to eliminate energy problems, particularly the 87 percent of PNG’s population living in darkness. The use of solar radiation tools plays a very significant role in determining exactly how much energy is radiated from the sun to any receiving surface.
The goal of energy development in PNG’s development strategic plan is to increase access to reliable, affordable, and modern clean energy to over 70 percent of all consumers by 2030 to meet future energy requirements and demands [ 18 ].
As per Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) Vision 2050, the country should be a resilient country by using sustainable development measures to provide for power generation which is 100 percent renewable, and to contribute towards the reduction of GHG emission.
