Harmony Energy, a leading developer, owner and operator of renewable energy infrastructure across Europe and New Zealand, and renewable energy development company, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), part of Abdul Latif Jameel Energy, have announced the energisation and launch of Clay Tye, Europe''s joint largest battery energy storage system ("BESS) by
Trade group the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE) has modelled that the EU could need 187GW of energy storage by 2030, which given that it only managed about a gigawatt in 2021, seems a steep climb. Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) is seeking regulatory approval of two Energy Storage Agreements and a
The deal calls for Saft to equip a 100-MW/200-MWh facility at the Huntly Power Station, the country''s largest thermal power complex on New Zealand''s North Island. Saft said on Thursday it will engineer the battery
While the UK is a standout leader of the continent in terms of deployment figures, and arguably also sophistication of business models – as pointed out in a new study by Aurora Energy Research – tracking the European market is also becoming much more interesting, Darmani said. "There was maybe not as much to speak about a couple of years ago on the

Meridian Energy Ltd (NZE:MEL) intends to build a battery energy storage system (BESS) of at least 100 MW north of New Zealand''s largest city, Auckland, to boost grid stability and allow more power to come from South Island generators.
Analysis from SolarPower Europe reveals that, in 2023, Europe installed 17.2 GWh of new battery energy storage systems (BESS), a 94% increase compared to 2022 and marked the third consecutive year of doubling the market. Germany led the market with 34% of the European market share in 2023, followed by Italy (22%) and the United Kingdom (15%).
As mentioned above, while New Zealand boasts large hydropower capacity, dry years due to low snowmelt or rainfall can leave hydroelectric unavailable for long periods. A government-supported project, NZ Battery, will investigate the feasibility of “non-hydroelectric energy storage options”.
The two companies said last Friday (20 October) that their 35MW/35MWh project, in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s Upper North Island, has entered the commissioning phase. Infratec general manager Nick Bibby said that the storage system is “the first of its scale to be built in New Zealand”.
Infratec general manager Nick Bibby said that the storage system is “the first of its scale to be built in New Zealand”. As reported by Energy-Storage.news, the two companies completed their assessment of the project in late 2021, selecting a site in Huntly, a town in the Waikato District.
WEL Networks and Infratec said they are actively pursuing other opportunities to enhance resilience and increase access to renewable energy in the region. New Zealand currently has a couple of 1MW battery storage systems in operation, but certainly nothing on the scale of the BESS in Huntly.
Transmission system operator Transpower also published studies in 2017 that showed the potential value of large-scale battery storage for balancing New Zealand’s grid and in 2019 that showed the potential value of distributed storage.
