The storage of lithium resources in a complete battery system is concentrated in two main components: the electrode materials and the electrolyte solution. The lithium in the electrode material provides the conversion energy, but some energy leads to capacity decrease due to lithium loss at the anode.
During this phase, lithium carbonate will be produced through a chemical reaction with sodium carbonate. The ensuing mixture will be separated into a crude product and a concentrated solution. The lithium will then be refined by reacting with carbon dioxide to form highly soluble lithium bicarbonate, which will separate from the insoluble

Lithium batteries have become the front-running rechargeable energy storage medium, particularly for the rapidly growing electric vehicle industry, creating a strong demand forecast for lithium. Argentina comprises a significant portion of the Lithium Triangle, which is home to more than half of the world’s resources of lithium.
These are some of the findings from a report prepared by the consulting firm Aleph Energy, led by Daniel Dreizzen, which analyzes the global lithium market while delving into Argentina in greater detail. These are the 41 companies of various characteristics that participate in the country’s 64 projects.
Argentina’s lithium reserves, concentrated in the provinces of Catamarca, Salta, and Jujuy, are part of the renowned ‘lithium triangle’. This geographically significant region, which Argentina shares with Chile and Bolivia, is a treasure trove, accounting for over half of the world’s lithium resources.
A testament to this forward-thinking approach is the imminent launch of its premier lithium battery plant. This venture, realized in partnership with the U.S.-based Livent Corp, underscores Argentina’s ambition to be a comprehensive player in the global lithium ecosystem.
If Argentina manages to bring all of projects to production , the country would produce up to 1.5 million metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent per year, exporting around US$30 billion. This scenario could be achieved by 2040, according to Dreizzen’s estimates.
Two Argentine sites, Salar de Hombre de Muerto and Salar Cauchari - Olaroz, are already producing lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate, and are among the top three with the highest lithium concentration in the region, behind Salar de Atacama in Chile. They are also among the top three with the lowest impurities.
