A lot of security necessities must be taken consideration when a smart grid constructed. Security vision must be taken consideration in communication infrastructure design. It is required to enhance the CIA triad of the system by building a robust and efficient smart grid cyber-infrastructure.
Social media has made it possible to manipulate the masses via disinformation and fake news at an unprecedented scale. This is particularly alarming from a security perspective, as humans have proven to be one of the weakest links when protecting critical infrastructure in general, and the power grid in particular.
In addition, from a communication networks perspective, power grids and their PCNs can be prone to denial of service attacks on their communication infrastructure, potentially disrupting vital control systems [ 84, 85 ].
Electric power grids have also heavily adopted information technology (IT) to perform real-time control, monitoring, and maintenance tasks. In 2015, a sophisticated cyber attack targeted Ukrainian’s power grid causing wide area power outages. It highlights the importance of investment on cyber security against intruders.
A smart grid network can has home devices connected to the power grid with bidirectional and real-time data communication. If attackers get the consumer information, they can abuse the information, keep track of the lifestyle of them, learn what appliances they use, and whether they are at home or not .
Following the principle of defense-in-depth, providing security for interconnected power grids needs to encompass a comprehensive set of measures for (i) device and application security, (ii) network security, (iii) physical security, as well as (iv) policies, procedures, and awareness. 4.1.
