He made this remark during the seminar "Trends on using solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage technologies in Thailand and Asean". He said up to 100,000 megawatts of solar cells were installed in many countries worldwide each year, adding that up to 500MW of solar cells would be installed in Thailand next year.
What Does the Future Hold for Battery Storage in Thailand? In this session, speakers and participants will shed light on the current developments and in-depth analysis of the battery storage market and share insights, trends and forecasts that build a springboard towards the betterment and enhancement of the battery industry.
"Thailand introduced a new feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme, offering a 25-year PPA agreement at THB 2.8331/kWh for solar-plus-storage projects, which will drive 600 MW storage colocated with solar between 2024 and 2030," said Anqi Shi, Senior Analyst of S&P Global at Sungrow Thailand Future Energy Summit organized on May 15th in Bangkok.
10 小时之前· This group''s emissions are estimated as 1.7 billion million tonnes of CO 2 per annum, and it is estimated that the transition to solar-plus-storage requires 940GW to 1,250GW of solar power
In an unexpected move, the government of Thailand has introduced a feed-in-tariff (FIT) of $0.090 (THB 2.1679)/kWh over 25 years for solar and a 25-year FIT of THB $0.075 (THB 2.8331)/kWh for solar plus storage. Thailand may lack the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) necessary to navigate supply and demand challenges. The 2024 PDP draft included 10,000 MW of BESS, but this may see the country struggle to fulfil carbon neutrality and Net Zero commitments over the coming decades.
Their total combined storage capacity was 994 MW. Interestingly, this allowed generators to sign semi-firm power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) with minimum availability guarantees. Many solar projects in Thailand have non-firm PPAs in place due to a lack of storage on site.
This is partly due to a lack of clarity on how battery storage fits into existing electricity infrastructure. In 2022, the Thai government approved 24 BESS projects, all of which were located alongside solar operations. Their total combined storage capacity was 994 MW.
Thailand currently has 3.47 GW of installed solar capacity, according to Apricum. The country has updated its 2037 solar targets by reducing the solar capacity target to 8.7 GW and keeping the target for floating solar at 2.73 GW. This content is protected by copyright and may not be reused.
Many solar projects in Thailand have non-firm PPAs in place due to a lack of storage on site. Arrangements, including BESS, reduce the strain on power grid infrastructure and allow for better planning. On the downside, these do not improve grid stability, nor do they provide power generators with more pathways to increase revenue.
The Federation of Thai Industries’ Renewable Energy Industry Club sees potential in sodium-ion battery (SIB) production as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries. SIBs, made from rock salt, could offer a new business opportunity given Thailand’s abundant rock salt reserves.
