Now Finnish renewable product maker Stora Enso, one of the largest private forest owners in the world, is partnering up with German start-up Voodin Blade Technology to make sustainable wooden wind turbine blades. The two companies are currently producing a 20-meter (66-foot) blade and are planning to make an 80-meter (262-foot) blade.
Voodin Blade Technology’s wooden wind turbine blades are made of LVL. Wood is a much more sustainable raw material than the currently used composite materials. The fiberglass and epoxy resin cannot be reused, meaning the material will go to waste after the blade is decommissioned.
In addition to its collaboration with Voodin Blades, Stora Enso recently announced a partnership with Swedish wood technology company Modvion to establish wood as the material of choice for wind turbine towers. Modvion erected the first wooden wind turbine tower on an island outside Gothenburg, Sweden, in May 2020.
Two companies, Stora Enso and Voodin Blade Technology GmbH, are collaborating to make wind turbines more sustainable by creating wooden rotor blades for wind turbines. Stora Enso is a biomaterials and wood construction company, and Voodin Blade Technology GmbH is a German startup developing these innovative blades.
To this end, Voodin’s wooden blades could be the perfect solution to bolster wind turbine technology’s claimed green credentials. Composite materials, such as fiberglass and epoxy resin, cannot be reused, which results in wasted material after decommissioning. Wood, on the other hand, is a much more sustainable raw material.
