Enhanced Efficiency The symbiotic relationship between water and solar panels in floating PV systems leads to enhanced solar efficiency. Water's natural cooling effect helps to maintain lower operational temperatures for the solar panels, mitigating the common overheating issue associated with land-based solar installations.
A detailed review of floating photovoltaic (FPV) technology was published in 2019. It speaks about the potential of efficient operation of photovoltaic (PV) panels and their utilization to reduce water evaporation [ 4 ].
Installing solar panels on water bodies has multiple benefits, like reducing water evaporation and reducing the water temperature on one side and improving the efficiency of the solar panel due to better cooling effect [ 3 ]. A detailed review of floating photovoltaic (FPV) technology was published in 2019.
The impact of the cooling effect of the water on the PV panel depends on the FPV design and float structures as well as ambient conditions, e.g., wind speed; nevertheless, regardless of the design, the FPVs have a lower temperature compared with the common solar farms (Kamuyu et al., 2018; Suh et al., 2019).
Previous studies have shown that reducing the PV panel temperature and ambient heat would improve the energy outputs; examples include designing cooling ducts to minimize efficiency loss (Brinkworth and Sandberg, 2006) or even experiments on submerged PV panels (Rosa-Clot et al., 2010).
We calculated the annual avoided evaporation flux using the Penman annual mean evaporation estimates (Fig. 3a) and assumed that shading the canals with solar PV panels would reduce evaporation losses by 78.5% ± 11.5%. We assumed the shaded area was equivalent to the total module area of 6,126.6 m 2 for a 1 MW installation.
