In absolute terms, that capacity is just 10GWh out of the more than 2,800GWh the world has in total, not to mention the global figure is set to double by 2030.
Last year, state-owned Antara news agency published an article entitled “Indonesia to become largest EV battery producer in 2027: Minister”.3 The headline was well in keeping with the government’s persistent push of the nickel-to-EV narrative and its vow to place Indonesia as a dominant player in the global battery and EV supply chain.
"Currently, there are 3 firms that plan to build EV battery plant," said Budi on November 11, 2023. According to Budi, the price of EV batteries is expected to be lower if they are produced in Indonesia. Therefore, it also will reduce the selling price of electric motorcycles, including the electric motorcycle conversion in the country.
Indonesia’s capacity is also supported by other battery facilities, such as PT International Chemical industry’s 100 megawatt-hour (MWh) plant.11 By 2027, Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) will probably add 15GWh of capacity.12
