The kingdom aims to increase its electricity generation capacity from 83 gigawatts (GW) in 2023 to 110 GW by 2028, supported by a $293 billion investment in both conventional power and renewable energy projects. At the heart of this strategy is Saudi Arabia's goal to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
In January 2021, Saudi Arabia announced its intent to generate 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, with the other half coming from natural gas-fired power gen-eration (Paraskova, 2021). The total renewable energy installed capacity in Saudi Arabia has increased from 3 MW in 2011 to 413 MW in 2020 (Figure 3).

One of the first energy eficiency initiatives in the KSA is the launch of the National Energy Eficiency Program in 2003 as a three-year program to improve the man-agement and eficiency of electricity generation and consumption in the kingdom.
Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop energy conservation policies for sustainable development. Electricity generation is 40% from Oil 52% from Natural Gas and 8% from steam. Generation capacity is approximately 55 GW. A looming energy shortage requires Saudi Arabia to increase its capacity.
