In the tropical climate of China’s Yunnan province, scientists are planting a key ingredient to help strengthen the country’s position as the world leader in wind power: balsa trees. Balsa, best known as a craft material for making model airplanes, is a major component of giant blades for wind turbines.
New World Wind also offers two other similar products that capture wind energy: the Modular Tree and the Bush. Both products use the same Aeroleaf technology, but they come in a smaller design that is more suitable for someone’s garden. You can customize the Modular Tree by choosing between 18, 24 or 30 Aeroleaves.
Here is what we know about China's wind power industry. HOW BIG IS IT? China has by far the world's biggest wind turbine production capacity, or 60% of 163 gigawatts (GW) in 2023, says Brussels-based industry association Global Wind Energy Council. Production capacity in Europe and the United States, by contrast, stood at 19% and 9% respectively.
China has long supported the development of wind farms and turbine production as part of its ambitious climate goals to reach peak emissions before 2030. Spurred by state support, China installed 77.1 GW of wind power last year, accounting for 65% of the global total. By comparison, European Union countries built only 17 GW.
