In this study, cold and thermal storage systems were designed and manufactured to operate in combination with the water chiller air-conditioning system of 105.5 kW capacity, with the aim of reducing operating costs and
Schematic representation of hot water thermal energy storage system. During the charging cycle, a heating unit generates hot water inside the insulated tank, where it is stored for a short period of time. During the discharging cycle, thermal energy (heat) is extracted from the tank's bottom and used for heating purposes.
A district cooling system can use thermal energy storage tanks to take advantage of off-peak tariffs. In such a system, the diagram will include the thermal energy storage tank capacity, physical size and the pumps used for the charging circuit.
Schematic diagram of ice-cool thermal energy storage system. During the charging cycle, cool thermal energy released during the phase transition from water to ice is stored in a storage tank. During the discharge cycle, as per demand, the same stored energy is released during the phase transformation from solid ice to water.
The working fluid is used to heat and cool two thermal storage tanks, which store a total of 600 kWh of energy. When needed, the process is reversed to generate 120 kW of electricity for the grid. Table 51 lists the other technical specifications of the demonstration plant.
Thermal energy storage systems utilize chilled water produced during off-peak times – typically by making ice at night when energy costs are significantly lower which is then stored in tanks (Fig. 2 below).
The figure below shows the schematic diagram of a chilled water system with heat recovery chiller. Thermal energy storage (TES) refers to technologies that store energy in a thermal reservoir for later re-use. The energy is usually stored in the form of ice. Therefore, the system is commonly refereed to “Ice-storage system”.
